GAMES AND MODES
The competitive mode and match details
Through the launch season both 1 map and 3 map formats will be played. 3 map formats involve the first 2 maps played followed by a tie-breaker 3rd map if needed.
Scan or Defend the Artifacts in one of two locations or
eliminate the opposing team. The goal for the Colonists
is to transport their scanning device to one of the available
artifact sites and then successfully scan it before the Reyab
team can stop them. The scanning process takes some time,
so if the Colonists manage to start the process, then the
Reyab only have a short window to retake the Artifact Site
and stop the scan.
If either team eliminated the other, they also win; but if the scanning process has begun then Reyab must still stop the scan, or they will lose even if they have eliminated the Colonists!

HOW IT WORKS
SIGN UP FOR THE LAUNCH SEASON
From July 1st through August first is YOUR chance to create a team or join a team and register to play in the IVRL Vail Launch Season.
All of the teams registered in the Launch Season will have an opportunity to compete in any of the 8 Online Qualifiers across the month of August. Each weekend will contain two qualifiers, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Teams will be randomly seeded and play in a format called the IVRL Super Swiss. Winners move on in a multi-stage tournament, lose twice to be eliminated. 6 teams will qualify at the end of each qualifier to move on to the post-season for a total of 48 teams playing in the post-season.
The post-season will have even higher stakes than the qualifiers. Teams will be split into 4 groups. Each will be a one day single elimination bracket, where 1 team will walk away with a trip to Miami and chance to win $35,000 in prizes.
The finals will be played in a hybrid LAN/Online double elimination format. The first round of the double elimination will be played online. This will serve as a seeding round. On October first, the 4 teams will play in Miami with a live audience in attendance.
LAUNCH SEASON FORMAT
A 3-stage season
8 Qualifiers. 6 Teams to move on per qualifer.
WHAT IS ALTERED SWISS ?
IVRL worked on combining the best of swiss tournaments and the best of elimination tournaments to create the “super-swiss” format for the qualifiers. It combines matchmaking from swiss style tournaments and elimination to create a high stakes format for the Launch Season qualifiers that combines hype with accuracy.
-All matches played on map Suna
-2 losses to be eliminated
-First to 11 points per match
-6 teams progress to the playoffs per qualifier
The number of rounds is based on the number of teams playing. At the end of each qualifier tournament 6 teams will proceed. After qualifying, teams are roster locked and cannot play in any other qualifers. Teams that haven’t qualified can play in as many qualifiers as they choose.
The first round involves randomized seeding of teams. After this round, all the teams with the same record are placed in a bracket ordered by point differential. These teams will play each other with the top seed playing the lowest seed. For example, all the 2-0 teams will play each other, while the 1-1 teams play each other. If a bracket has an odd # of players with the same record, the highest seed will drop down to a slightly worse record and play their best team.
- As the stages progress, the best teams will play each other and matches will continue to get harder.
- Teams that lose twice will be eliminated from the qualifier
- No repeat matches
Since there may be an odd number of teams playing, byes are a necessity
Byes are assigned to:
- Teams that have not received a bye yet
- Worst record
- Lowest seed
This ensures that byes are assigned to the teams least likely to win therefore least likely to affect the final outcome.
At the end of the tournament, byes are assigned to teams with the best record and best seed as that is least likely to affect final outcome of the 6 teams moving on to the post-season.
Single Elimination 3-Map Format.
Playoffs are split into 4 groups across the first 2 weekends of September. Teams will be notified of their groups in the last week of august
- Single elimination bracket
- 12 teams per group
- Best of 3
- 1 team per group proceeds
Teams will be seeded and placed in the groups based on their qualifier standings and performance.
Online Seeding. 1-Map.
Prior to the Miami Vail Major, the 4 finalist teams will play in a round robin seeding stage. This single day event will have each team playing 3 three-map matches.
Teams will be ranked 1-4 for the MVM based on their performance in the round robin.
